The goal of this course is to broaden the fundamental understanding of Korean architecture from the prehistoric vestiges to contemporary urbanism. This course, however, put more emphasis on the pre-modern traditional architecture of Korea. Therefore the lectures are composed with several topic-oriented groups like as religious architecture, residential architecture, urbanism and governmental architecture in pre-modern Korea on the basis of understanding of traditional wooden structure. This course also covers the modernization process of architecture and urbanism after open-port of Korea in 1876. This course will provide students with an understanding of the progress of architecture in the historical perspective.
* Grading policy
1) Attendance: 10 points (either 3 late attendants or 1 absence will result in a 1 point reduction in attendance grade)
2) Mid-term Exam: 30 points
3) Final Exam: 30 points
4) Assignments: 30 points (Wooden bracket structure model 15 points, urban architecture research report 15 points)
