This course deals with the general problems of geotechnical engineering, and it includes the following topics: analysis, design methods and other engineering considerations on shallow foundations; deep foundations; retaining walls; excavations; soil improvement; and slope stability. Substructure analysis and design methods based on principles of soil mechanics is covered through the explanation of field work and exercise problems. For the purpose of introducing the students to the realities of recent research and practical trends, the course will invite guest lecturers. There will also be a field trip.
