With the rapid development of nitride semiconductors, it is most likely that white light emitting diodes will replace incandescent and fluorescent lamps. Considering that over 20% of the world electricity production is consumed for general illumination, solid-state lighting based on nitride semiconductors will be more and more important in economic, environmental and even strategic sense. In this lecture, basic principles of light emitting diodes as well as ways to improve various efficiencies will be introduced for researchers in the area of light emitting diodes.
